This Week's Round Up + Bookie Brunch

I took part in Bookie Brunch again! =)

This weeks question :
People often tackle the issue of characters or plot being unrealistic or not possible in real life. Are you on the-book-must-be-believable/realistic side or not? Why or why not?

My answer :
This is a tough question because l think it depends on a few things :1 - My Mood : Sometimes l could literally read anything and it can be quite unrealistic but l still love it and other times any little thing which doesn't seem real can put me off a book. For example, l recently read The Iron King which l enjoyed but l did feel if l would have read it at the wrong time l probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much or at all. It totally depends!

2 - How It's Written - I think if the unrealistic side of the book is put across with realistic things then the parts which are unrealistic can become more realistic. For example if the plot of the book is very 'far fetched' but has strong characters alongside then plot then the characters can make everything feel much more real.

3 - A Mix - This kinda goes alongside the 'My Mood' category. I like both fantasy and also 'down to earth' books and if l read too much of one then l kinda get bored and fed up of it. I like to mainly read books which have a little bit of fantasy mixed with normal YA but sometimes l can read books where you really have to open up your mind to believe what your reading but l have to be in the right mood for this and not have read too many books like this recently. Overall l enjoy both sort of books and wouldn't be without them. The world would be rather boring if everything was like how it is now with nothing new from what we know. I like to be able to be taken into a new world where the author has used their imagination. But like l said, l like to limit myself to these sort of books and also read 'normal' books.

See everyone else's thoughts here!

Guest Post - Ednah Walters : Author of The Guardian Legacy Series

Hi Ednah, thank you for joining us at Books for Company. Please introduce yourself and your series, The Guardian Legacy.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Jodie. My name is Ednah Walters, the author of the Guardian Legacy series. I grew up reading Nancy Drew mysteries and never thought I’d one day share my love of books with readers.
The Guardian Legacy series chronicle the love story between Lil Falcon and Bran Llyr. They’re both Nephilim/children of the fallen angels. While Lil was born among the Guardian and grew up on earth, Bran was raised on an island among the evil faction of their race, the Hermonites, or as humans call them, demons.
Here’s a brief summary of what happens in book 1 and 2:
-
Awakened (The Guardian Legacy, #1)AWAKENED (book 1)
Bran Llyr was born and raised among demons—those pesky Nephilim, who go after human souls and cause mayhem around the world. To save his little sister, he risked being vanquished and sought help from the Guardians, the good Nephilim who guard humans and annihilate demons on a daily basis. What he didn’t plan on was meeting a girl of his dreams, Lil Falcon, or falling in love.
Lil has lived the life of a nomad with her doting grandfather. Little does she know why they move a lot or that when she turns sixteen, her identity will be revealed and her destiny will lead her down a path of danger, new discoveries and true love.

Betrayed (The Guardian Legacy, #2)BETRAYED (book 2):
Lil Falcon is no ordinary Guardian. Her father is a nature-bender demon, which makes her powers unique. Throw in the fact that she is the wielder of the Nephilim’s most powerful weapon, the Kris Dagger, and you have a powerful girl both the Guardians and the demons want on their side.
Bran and Lil soon find out that falling in love is about the most dangerous thing they have ever done. Someone very close to Lil is willing to use Bran and his past to lure Lil to the dark side. It will take everything, including putting their souls on the line, to stay one step ahead of the traitor and the demons.

Lil has been brought up by her grandad and has a very unique relationship with him. Was this already planned before you started writing and what made you choose for it to have been her grandad who brought her up?
From the beginning, I saw her with an indulgent father figure guiding her. I knew that the dynamics of their relationship should be different because of their age difference, so I chose a grandfather. I love their relationship.

You have a lot of unique names in this book, how do you choose the names for your characters?
I’ve cheated and borrowed angelic and demonic names like Valafar, Rastiel, Tariel... Then there’s Bran Llyr from Celtic mythology. Bran was the son of Sea-god Llyr. Others just popped in my head.

What sort of books do you enjoy reading yourself?
I read everything. From YA urban fantasy like the Mortal Instrument series and Hush, Hush to adult fantasy like J.R. Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood; contemporary to romantic suspense, which I also write under E.B. Walters; espionage, courtroom and medical thrillers by Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum, James Grisham and Jonathan Cook. As long as it has a good plot and I have time, I read it.

Have you always wanted to be an author and what's your favourite part about being an author?
I always wanted to write, but I never thought I’d publish. I mean, I went to college and majored in chemistry, went on to graduate school/higher education and got my doctorate. The writing bug bit me after I decided to be a stay-at-home mother. I did it for fun at first, early chapter books for my children. Then I moved to romance because I read romance a lot.
My favorite part is getting e-mail messages from people who’ve read and enjoyed my books.

Do you have any other books 'in the works' including more in The Guardian Legacy and a new series/stand alone?
I’m working on book 3 of the Guardian Legacy series—Hunted. Since I also write adult romance, my other project is an adult romance.

Sorry everyone, I know I said there was going to be a bookshelf tour but basically I have been sleeping at my BF's all week and now I have a lack of voice!

Luce would die for Daniel. And she has. Over and over again. Throughout time, Luce and Daniel have found each other, only to be painfully torn apart: Luce dead, Daniel left broken and alone. But perhaps it doesn’t need to be that way. . .Luce is certain that something—or someone—in a past life can help her in her present one. So she begins the most important journey of this lifetime . . . going back eternities to witness firsthand her romances with Daniel . . . and finally unlock the key to making their love last.Cam and the legions of angels and Outcasts are desperate to catch Luce, but none are as frantic as Daniel. He chases Luce through their shared pasts, terrified of what might happen if she rewrites history.Because their romance for the ages could go up in flames . . . forever.
I have to admit before I started Torment I had to go back and read Fallen as I had forgotten what had happened but as soon as I remembered I couldn’t wait to read Passion! Passion wasn’t what I was expecting so although I may sound disappointed in this review it’s just because it was very different from what I imagined so I kind of have mixed feelings.

One thing I can definitely say I liked is being able to get to know both Luce and Daniel better after the previous two books. I really enjoy the different chapters for both Daniel and Luce as they make their characters so much stronger and separate people. I got to like Luce more in this book, she has frustrated me a little bit in the past because of her decisions and how quick she is to make them but I felt in Passion I understood her more.
I really enjoyed going back to their past life’s to see what happened in them and how it affected their relationship in the future, especially seeing if Daniel's love for Luce is as strong as it seems to be. Sadly I did feel that this kind of went on too long, I would have liked either less past life’s or less descriptions of the past life's and more twists or action.

The main and big negative thing for me in this book is lack of action. Without meaning to sound terrible because I actually did enjoy this book, as you can tell from the 4 star rating, I just felt there wasn’t that much ‘point’ to it. I just didn’t feel like much really actually happened. By that I mean there wasn’t any point’s in Passion where I was totally gripped and couldn’t put it down and I really expected this. Nothing ever seemed to put me on edge and I never found myself becoming impatient to find out what happened next. I did like how the characters changed in this book and Luce and Daniel came to ‘realise’ things and I enjoyed seeing how this changed some things.

Overall Passion is a nice in between book between Torment and the 4th and final book. I felt it definitely left a big cliff-hanger and I am left very excited to read Rapture. Passion also cleared things up from Fallen and Torment. Try not to expect a book packed with action but instead a book where you will come to understand Daniel and Luce’s past life’s more.

The Time Will Come #27

The Time Will Come -
Every Thursday l am going to list a book which l really want to read/keep meaning to get to. These are mostly books which have been on my shelf for awhile now but don't have to be, maybe you got it two weeks ago and really want to read it!
~
Want to join in?
- Pick a book you have been meaning to read

I think l won this on Librarything early reviewers a few months back and l really, honestly, mean't to read this book quickly to show my thanks to the author for sending  me this.
Well I suddenly got a lot of other books for review and things like deadlines started to come from everywhere and this book just hasn't been picked up yet. I really should pick it up and would hopefully become quickly engrossed in so l could actually read it like l said l would!

Waiting on Wednesday (#28)

Waiting on Wednesday
"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

He's After MeHe's After Me - Chris Higgins
This is actually already out but l hadn't ever heard of it before but I always like to have a 'peep' at the books at my local supermarket and this was there!
I don't know how I haven't heard about this before as it looks and sounds awesome =)
Very tempting to get it but due to lack of funding (monies!) I can't get it =(
Anyway, this sounds really good! I love the cover and have to admit it what's drew me to the book but after reading the first line of the blurb I knew this is one I want to read one day.

My Life Through A Picture #1

I really enjoy doing 'First Lines' post but it's just not getting many comments so l don't know if people are actually reading it. I will still do it but just not as much as planned. Here's my new plan below =)

My Plan
To do First Lines, Paperback vs Hardback and My Life Through A Picture for a month at a time.

What is My life ; A Picture?
I love pictures and I am obsessed with them so I thought every week for 4 weeks I would show you a picture which has some sort of memory and I will then tell you about that memory =)

21-06-09
Vic, Me - Jodie, Frankie & Chloe

This holds a great memory for me for a few reasons but for the main reason; I met my boyfriend, Sam! =)
My friend got a flat of her own so she invited lots of friends round for a party and it was great fun. I am not the sort of party person but I went anyway as my friend was a good friend and I wanted to be there to help her out and tidy up after etc.
Sam is childhood friends with Frankie. Frankie is my best childhood friend and although l had heard about Sam I never met him.
Due to being very drunk l went over to him and started to talk and introduce myself (in a very drunk and loud way!)
After that, a few days later, we met up and  have since been together!
Of course it's also a great memory because I was there with my friends =)

Cover Crazy #28

Hosted by thebookworms
Brightest Kind Of Darkness - P.T. Michelle
This is one l love mostly because of the setting. It really makes you wonder what the book is about and why the girl is there.
The colours of the setting are really pretty! The colours of the leaves really stand out and look good next to her red dress as well as the white text.
I am straight away wondering what the black feathers are about and if that's what they are, definitely a cover which does it's job in the way where you want to find out more.

A mysterious boy. A haunting secret ...
'A shiver crawled up my spine. It felt like the loneliest place in the world. For a second
I thought I caught a snatch of music in the air, but it was just the wind whistling
through cracks in the fairground hoardings.
My instincts screamed, "Run away, Bel! Run away and never return!"
But instead my fingers closed around the ticket in my pocket.
ADMIT ONE.'
Bel has never met anyone like Luka. And the day she follows him into the abandoned fairground, she is totally unprepared for the turn her life is about to take.
Dark Ride is only a little book, at just under 200 pages l thought this book would be a nice little quick average read. Dark Ride is actually so much more than that!
Bel is a character who l straight away liked from the first few lines. Her humour is something which l really enjoyed in this book and it mixed well with other parts of the book, for example it was nice to have the humour amongst the tension. The humour also made this book feel very real and l never doubted anything in this book for a second.

The relationships in this book were also something which l really enjoyed about Dark Ride. Both the relationship Bel had with her mum and dad were very different and also interesting to read about. The way Bel thought about her mum was one which l think a lot of people her age can understand as mother and daughter relationships can both be loving but also tense and full on at times. Luka was another great character who played a big part in this story. I loved how Caroline slowly revealed small things about him.

There were a few little twists throughout this book which really got me gripped to this book and wanting to find out what happens more, l didn’t see a lot of it coming at all! The storyline is definitely one which is unique and keeps you guessing throughout the book.

Overall Dark Ride is a must read, you will be engrossed from the first page finding yourself both laughing, biting your nails and reading as fast as you can to find out what happens next! Caroline is a very talented author who has created a unique story that flows very well, l will definitely be looking out for more books by her. Do NOT give this one a miss!

Forget You
Forget You - Jennifer Echols
Released - 27th July 2010

Part Of The Blurb :
Why can't you choose what you forget . . . and what you remember? There’s a lot Zoey would like to forget. Like how her father has knocked up his twenty-four- year old girlfriend. Like Zoey’s fear that the whole town will find out about her mom’s nervous breakdown. Like darkly handsome bad boy Doug taunting her at school. Feeling like her life is about to become a complete mess, Zoey fights back the only way she knows how, using her famous attention to detail to make sure she’s the perfect daughter, the perfect student, and the perfect girlfriend to ultra-popular football player Brandon.

I have this to read and actually hope to read it within the next month as l am definitely in the mood for these sort of books lately.
Released - 13th July 2010

Part Of The Blurb :
Who is Katherine Patterson? It is a question she hopes no one can answer. To erase her past, Katherine has moved to a new city, enrolled in a new school, and even changed her name. She’s done the next best thing to disappearing altogether. Now, wary and alone, she seeks nothing more than anonymity. What she finds instead is the last thing she expected: a friend.
Even more unlikely, Katherine’s new friend is the most popular and magnetic girl in school. Extroverted, gorgeous, flirtatious, and unpredictable, she is everything that Katherine is not and doesn’t want to be: the center of attention. Yet Alice’s enthusiasm is infectious, her candor sometimes unsettling, and Katherine, in spite of her guarded caution, finds herself drawn into Alice’s private circle.

I haven't really given this book that much attention before but this sounds really good! Definitely one l will pick up if l see it in my library.
