About Falling Fast

Falling Fast is a love story, the first of a four-book series about River and Flynn. Each of the main characters has a core personality trait – a need - that was my starting point for writing: River wants to fall in love, but worries that she isn’t beautiful or interesting enough to attract the boy of her dreams. Flynn likes to keep people at arms length and has a hot temper that gets him into frequent trouble, and yet River manages to get right under his skin from the start.
The two meet when River comes to audition for a part in Flynn’s school production of Romeo and Juliet. River wants to play Juliet. Flynn has already been cast as Romeo and is a brilliant, natural actor. River’s close friend, Emmi, is also at the audition – and the favourite for the role that River so badly desires. River is intrigued by Flynn and worries that pretty, vivacious Emmi will get not only the part of Juliet but Flynn as well.
River has been insecure about herself for a long time. Though Emmi and her other close friend Grace tell her that she’s attractive, River doesn’t believe it. She goes to a girls’ Grammar school in North London and is studying for her GCSEs. Flynn is in the sixth form at a boys’ Catholic school where he stands out because of his confidence, his rudeness and his determination to go his own way on everything.
One of the many things that makes River feel self-conscious is her unusual name. As she explains in the story, her parents were both hippies when she and her brother, Stone, were born. River’s parents are now divorced. Her mum has given up the alternative life and now works in an office. River gets on better with her dad who now lives on a Commune a couple of hours outside London.
Neither River’s family nor her friends really understand what River sees in Flynn and this is where the Romeo and Juliet parallels seep into the story – as the main characters end up feeling that it really is ‘them against the world’.

I think River's a beautiful name, but I can understand why she may feel self conscious about it.
