Guest Post - Character interview with Brusenna (Witch Song)

Thank you Amber!
Witch Song
Sadly most of the people around you blame a lot on witches. What would you say to them if you had 5 minutes to convince them you only mean good?
You think Witches have caused the droughts, floods, hurricanes—all of the natural disasters. We haven’t. As best we can, we’ve stop them. Or we did, before the others were capture by the Dark Witch. So if you think those disasters were bad, soon there will be winds strong enough to knock over your houses, rains that swell rivers and drown your animals, late spring frosts to kill your crops. It’s merely a taste of what it will be like if I don’t free the others. Because I can’t control the seasons. Not alone.
If I fail, it will only grow worse. You children and their children will suffer the most. In
your old age, you’ll realize what we did for you. By then it will be too late.

Have you ever been treated as an equal in your village and how does it feel to be
treated as you are?

No. They’ve always detested me. The boys used to dare each other to sneak past our forest and kill our animals. Thankfully, most never made it. The ones that did . . . Well, it doesn’t seem fair to kill a plow horse does it? They got my cat too. She was white with a black spot on her forehead.
When the drought grew worse, they blamed my mother and I. They didn’t understand that two witches are powerless to control something as massive as the seasons. If I hadn't left when I had, I think they would have killed me. Eventually.

Do you ever feel like you can be proud to be a witch and are you?

I didn’t used to feel proud of my witch heritage. It only seemed to inspire hatred and mistrust. For a long time, I only wished to fit in. I longed for friends, for approval. And being a Witch only seemed withhold all that from me.
I don’t feel that way now. I’ve learned that what makes me different makes me beautiful.
I wouldn’t trade my powers to fit their molds.

How do you feel about finding out that your mum hid lots of important information from you? Do you understand/believe she was trying to protect you or do you feel it would have been better to know?
I’m still trying to forgive her. Part of me understands that without her interference, I would have been raised as a weapon to defeat the Dark Witch. I know she was trying to save me. But she took it too far. In trying to protect me, she crippled me. I was ignorant and helpless. How could she expect me to live in a world I knew nothing about it? To protect myself from weapons I
didn’t know existed?

Did your mum teach you from a young age about singing and your powers? Does it take energy to do these?
My earliest memories of my mother are of her singing in the language of power—the language of the Creators. When I was old enough, I had voice lessons. She taught me many growing songs. But no defensive songs. Those she wrote in a journal, which I used to learn what I could after she was captured. The rest I learned from the libraries at the Witches’ headquarters in Haven.
As for energy, no more than singing usually requires. For a single small plant, a soft
song is sufficient. Something as large as changing the seasons requires a choir of
Witches, all singing in perfect harmony. Plants respond better to beautiful voices, perfect pitch and melody—some Witches, known as Wastrals—can’t even grow the smallest seedlings.
When my voice tires, my range shrinks. The plants begin to respond slowly.

How would you describe your guardian?
Joshen is my best friend. He was the first outsider who heard me sing and saw the beauty in it instead of the fearing me. He’s tall—head and shoulders taller than me. Thin, but in a strong sort of way. He has a crop of hair that hangs low over his forehead. His legs bow out at the knees— probably from riding so much. He has a permanent sort of wrinkle around his eyes, as if he never stops smiling long enough for the lines to smooth out. The only thing he loves more than food is his horses. He’s easy going and always sees the good in everything. But most of all, he’s loyal.
