An eighth grade girl was taken today . . . With this first sentence, readers are immediately thrust into a fast-paced thriller that doesn't let up for a moment. In a world not too far removed from our own, kids are being taken away to special workhouses if their families exceed the monthly debt limit imposed by the government. Thirteen-year-old Matt briefly wonders if he might be next, but quickly dismisses the thought. After all, his parents are financially responsible, unlike the parents of those other kids. As long as his parents remain within their limit, the government will be satisfied and leave them alone. But all it takes is one fatal visit to the store to push Matt’s family over their limit—and to change his reality forever.
I didn't actually see that this book is aimed at 8-13 year old's till l had read the book. Any way l am glad l didn't see that or l might not have read this book and after really enjoying it l am glad l read it!!
The main character, Matt, is only 13 years old and this can really put me off some books as l thought he might be too immature for me to want to read and find out about (No offensive! I just don't usually like books with characters who are quite a bit younger). I actually didn't think this once in the book. Matt is a mature character but not too mature for his age where l think that he acts too old for his age. He has great characteristics and is the perfect character for this book, innocent but kind of also a typical teenager.
Along with Matt l thought maybe the storyline would be too simple for me and not involve enough things to interest me. Again l was nicely surprised, this book kept me wanting to read the next page and then the next even though it doesn't have the most complex storyline. As it says in the blurb the whole plot behind this book is that families can't go over the spending limit, a simple idea which Kristen has made into a good read. Kristen's writing is perfect for a book aimed at younger people but still managed to keep me interested by the world which she has created which is very unique and interesting to read about.
Overall this is a fun and quick read which l recommend to anyone who wants a light dystopian read!
Sounds really great Jodi. I've just hopped over to UK Book tours and asked Lynsey if I can join the tour for this one. I really want to read it now :D
