Karolyn is the author of the Brothers of Rock series, a romance book about five band members and their group called Chasing Cross.
One of my favorite things about creating the Brothers of Rock series is that in creating lives off stage – creating these lives that go beyond the guitars, the drums, the music, the crowds, the luxury, and the wealth – I get to create these five men in the band that make up Chasing Cross. And in creating these men, I’m creating five totally separate people. They consider themselves a group of brothers based on their music… and yes, lead singer Johnnie and guitarist Danny are actual brothers. But after that, they look different, they talk different, they act different.
In the first book, All Access, lead singer Johnnie is shocked when a woman just walks into his life. More so, he is caught off guard when she doesn’t know who he is. The idea of it entices him and as he starts to follow his heart, he guides himself through some big decisions both personally and professionally. Johnnie is tall, strong, and basically the unsaid leader of Chasing Cross. By being this, it gives him the sense of being ultra wise or unable to have anything but perfection. But Johnnie does have flaws. He does push boundaries. And it shows.
Now, take the second book in Brothers of Rock – Broken Sound – where you get to meet guitarist, Davey. He once was a hard partier but has settled down. He’s not looking for love. He’s looking to write some new material with Danny… and that’s when a woman shows up with a baby claiming it’s his. Logic seeps out of Davey’s mind in a way that perhaps Johnnie wouldn’t have allowed it. All Davey can do when seeing the baby is think about his life. He wants to make sure this baby – whether it’s his or not – has a good life. That’s when the romantic side begins to come out in Davey. That’s when he meets a woman that could possibly change his life… but there lies the biggest conflict of all… the woman Davey is falling for is not the woman with the baby. Now Davey must be strong and true and proud and find his way.
It’s really quite a challenge but very fun to build these stories, these relationships, and these individuals. Each member of Chasing Cross has their own demons. They lived their own pasts, presents, and they envision their own futures. Together, on stage, they’re one, brothers in music, playing to an audience and a world. But once the lights are on, the crowd goes home, and the instruments are silent, they become themselves. And that’s the power of music and the beauty of the Brothers of Rock series.
