Guest Post - Karolyn James on Brother's of Rock series

Please welcome Karolyn James to Books for Company
Karolyn is the author of the Brothers of Rock series, a romance book about five band members and their group called Chasing Cross.

One of my favorite things about creating the Brothers of Rock series is that in creating lives off stage – creating these lives that go beyond the guitars, the drums, the music, the crowds, the luxury, and the wealth – I get to create these five men in the band that make up Chasing Cross. And in creating these men, I’m creating five totally separate people. They consider themselves a group of brothers based on their music… and yes, lead singer Johnnie and guitarist Danny are actual brothers. But after that, they look different, they talk different, they act different.
In the first book, All Access, lead singer Johnnie is shocked when a woman just walks into his life. More so, he is caught off guard when she doesn’t know who he is. The idea of it entices him and as he starts to follow his heart, he guides himself through some big decisions both personally and professionally. Johnnie is tall, strong, and basically the unsaid leader of Chasing Cross. By being this, it gives him the sense of being ultra wise or unable to have anything but perfection. But Johnnie does have flaws. He does push boundaries. And it shows.
Now, take the second book in Brothers of Rock – Broken Sound – where you get to meet guitarist, Davey. He once was a hard partier but has settled down. He’s not looking for love. He’s looking to write some new material with Danny… and that’s when a woman shows up with a baby claiming it’s his. Logic seeps out of Davey’s mind in a way that perhaps Johnnie wouldn’t have allowed it. All Davey can do when seeing the baby is think about his life. He wants to make sure this baby – whether it’s his or not – has a good life. That’s when the romantic side begins to come out in Davey. That’s when he meets a woman that could possibly change his life… but there lies the biggest conflict of all… the woman Davey is falling for is not the woman with the baby. Now Davey must be strong and true and proud and find his way.
It’s really quite a challenge but very fun to build these stories, these relationships, and these individuals. Each member of Chasing Cross has their own demons. They lived their own pasts, presents, and they envision their own futures. Together, on stage, they’re one, brothers in music, playing to an audience and a world. But once the lights are on, the crowd goes home, and the instruments are silent, they become themselves. And that’s the power of music and the beauty of the Brothers of Rock series.

My Top Ten Words/Topics that Instantly Make me Buy a Book

'Heartbreaking'
Probably sounds a bit crazy and strange but I love a good book which can make me cry. To be able to get so wrapped up in a character/s and a storyline it makes me cry, has to be pretty special and amazingly written!

'Swoon Worthy'
From my reviews you will see I love a good swoon worthy main male character, who doesn't?

'Questions/Tag Lines'
I love tag lines on covers, they totally draw me into a book and make me want to know more. Especially those taglines with a question mark at the end.

A Quote From an Author I Love
Of course this makes me want to pick the book up if it has a quote from an author I enjoy myself. It's almost as if I trust them to have good taste because they are a good author!

Dystopian
I love dystopian reads, I feel like that they so many different directions which they can go in and so many different possibilities.

Beach
I love a good book which is based around a beach with the sunshine, sand, sea and everything else which comes with it!

'Must Choose'
Probably a random one but I love it when covers or blurb say the character must choose between something/someone.

Road Trip
I haven't read a road trip book for a while but the ones I have read I have loved so definitely need to read some more road trip books.

Fast Paced
Who doesn't love a book which is fast paced? Those books which are dragged on endlessly wear thin quickly. I love a good book which can keep me gripped.

 .................................... The Blurb  ....................................
Happy Endings are for fairy tales. Or the movies. Not for real life. At least, not in Claire’s life. Even though she’s starting over, she knows better than to want too much this time. But when she falls, literally, into the strong arms of Hollywood’s ‘it’ boy Josh Wiley, Claire’s in for some surprises. Her plans for rest and relaxation are forgotten as one incredible night with Josh becomes two… And her heart begins to want him as much as her body. Will two kids, one bastard ex-husband, and Josh’s juggernaut career mean the end of their affair? Or can Claire find her happy ending after all?

 .................................... My Thoughts   ....................................
In Short
- Hollywood Ever After has very strong characters who completely make the book.
- I very quickly got into the book and struggled to put it down.
- Josh, the main male character, is very swoon worthy.

In Long
I have to admit that when I started Hollywood Ever After I thought it was going to be a sweet romance and a nice easy read. Hollywood Ever After definitely has a sweet romance in it but it is also so much more.
I became addicted within the first chapter; Claire straight away won me over with her sweet and shy nature. She has been through so much yet is so strong for her children, I really admired her character and felt like I wanted to try and protect her. The twists which involved Claire really added to the story because it doesn’t really mention it in the blurb it surprised me and definitely added to the addictive factor of the story. It was refreshing to have such a series subject in a book I thought would just be a romance and Sasha really went about the right way in adding it into the story as it pushed me closer to Claire.
Josh was portrayed just perfectly by Sasha and I straight away fell for him! I didn’t blame Claire for liking him, I wouldn’t be able to resist myself! The other characters all added to the book, there wasn’t any character who didn’t have their own part and the story felt complete with all the right characters.

The storyline started pretty much straight away, there was never a moment to be bored and when I needed to put the book down there never seemed to be like a good time because I was always so desperate to see what would happen next.

Final Thoughts
Hollywood Ever After is an addictive read which I found hard to put down. The main characters really made the story for me.

Cover Crazy #92

Playing Tyler - T L Costa
Oh how I adore this cover! As soon as I saw it when the publisher sent me the image I loved it. Grabs my attention very quickly.
I love this cover because :
- I love how the black and white along with the red has been used. Really benefits the cover and makes it stand out so much.
- Poppy's are so pretty as it is but I love how the beautiful red has been used against the white background making them look gorgeous.
- LOVE the tag line, how can you not want to pick this book up?!
- Really like the font the authors name is in, it just goes so well with the rest of the cover.
- I think this cover really tells you a lot about the book before you even read the blurb.

September Girls - Bennett Madison
Well I love covers which have water as its main theme and this cover is no different, how awesome is it?!
I love this cover because :
-  I love the two different colours used in this cover and how they are separated by the people.
- It's so different from the usual romantic books, this one has so much class but still the very sweet side of things.
- I love the little white sparkles on the blue half of the book and the lighting behind their heads.
- The cover has a very mysterious feel about it because the characters are recognizable and I really like that.
- I like how it's just the title and authors name, not too crowded.

Joey's Bedtime Stories (#1)

This has took a long time coming so apolgises for that!
I did an introduction post on this new post here

Joey's Bedtime Stories
Books are company for children too

Publisher - Frances Lincoln
Thank you so much for letting Joey review Off to Market

The Blurb
Hop aboard Joe's bus on its way to the market! Here come families carrying fruit and vegetables and boxes and coats, and some chickens . . . and goats! Soon the bus is full to the top and little Keb has to sit right at the back with the animals. And when the bus reaches a hill it just can't go any further. How can they lighten the load and get to market on time?

Joey's Review
Off to Market is a hardback book with pages full of colourful, bold, pictures which children LOVE! It's a story about people getting on the bus with different vegtables, fruit and even animals!
The pictures are wonderful and really add to the story. Joey loved looking at the pictures and talking them through with his mummy and daddy. He would often count the amount of people on the bus and the people getting on the bus, a great way to learn and become confident in counting the amount of things.

Joey often asks for 'The Bus Book' at bedtime and says it's one of his favorite stories. So much so that after reading Off to Market a few times he asked his mummy to take him on a bus ride (He hasn't been on a bus before). Joey loved his bus ride experience and talked about the while on the bus.

The Time Will Come #93

-
The Time Will Come -
Every Thursday l am going to list a book which l really want to read/keep meaning to get to. These are mostly books which have been on my shelf for awhile now but don't have to be, maybe you got it two weeks ago and really want to read it!
~
Want to join in?
- Pick a book you have been meaning to read
- Do a post telling us about the book
- Leave a comment with a link to your post.

Die For Me, the first in the series, was one of my favorite books of the year and I couldn't wait for Until I Die.
When I got a copy of Until I Die I was so so excited and wanted to start it straight away. I decided to finish the book I was reading and then read Until I Die. Well sadly I still haven't got to it!
I need to remind myself of what happens in Die For Me so I am going to reread the ending to 'jog' my memory.
SO hope I read this soon and love it as much as I want too!

The Blurb
Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.
As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.
In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series.

Waiting on Wednesday (#90)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

No ReverseNo Reverse - Marion Croslydon
Published : 12th August 2013
Oh I adore this cover. How amazingly hot is that guy? ;)
The blurb grabbed me straight away, especially the first four lines which are in the bold writing.
It makes me want to know more, I love it when couples who split up have to come together for some reason or another.
I always find it interesting to see how the two characters deal with seeing someone they used to be in love with. Even if they nearly always end up back together, I love the journey they go on.
-
The Blurb :
A girl who needs to undo the past.
A boy who wants to forget it.
In love, there’s no way back.

At high school in Steep Hill, Kansas, Cassie O’Malley and Josh MacBride were the poster couple for quarterback/cheerleader romance until they starred in their own tale of teen pregnancy. No need to say: their shotgun wedding was low-key. But when there was no baby anymore, they went their separate ways.

Five years later, Josh has breezed through Georgetown and is about to finish his post-grad degree at Oxford University. He is set to join a lobbying group on Capitol Hill, owned by his new fiancée’s father. For Josh, the sky is now the limit… only he must first take care of a tiny legal matter: technically, he’s still married to the girl who broke his heart.

Meanwhile, Cassie has been waiting tables in Steep Hill to pay for her sick grandmother’s care. On the day of the old lady’s funeral, Cassie is served with two sets of papers. Josh is asking for a divorce. Her heart squeezes, but, well, he moved on a long time ago. But the second envelope shakes Cassie to the core. So, for the first time, she leaves Kansas and heads to good ol’ England.

There, Cassie finds that Josh has not just “moved on,” he’s freakin’ engaged to some blue-blooded heiress. The feelings Cassie had buried deep rush back to her. But no matter if he keeps thrusting the divorce papers under her nose, she needs him to save the only person she loves more than Josh, more than life itself…

Blog Post - Lily Herne on Authors who inspire her writing.

Please welcome Lily Herne to Books for Company.
Lily is the author of Deadlands, a story about a town with zombies!
Thank you for taking the time to write this guest post for us all, I love finding out what authors have inspired other authors.
Deadlands
Ten authors who inspired our writing:

Choosing just ten authors was an almost impossible task, as we’re both inspired by pretty much everything we read (we could easily have compiled our top 100!) Several of the authors we’ve chosen are examples of writers who combine believable world-building with character-driven storylines (which is way harder than it looks!); others are writers whose talent and storytelling skills have inspired us to do better in our own work. In no particular order:

Max Brooks: In our opinion, Brooks’ World War Z is the coolest zombie novel ever written. World-spanning, impeccably researched and (most importantly) a blast to read. We’re going to be cheeky and add in another stellar author who writes awesome zombie fiction – Mira Grant (pseudonym of Seanan McGuire). Grant’s Newsflesh trilogy is part political satire, part zombie pop-culture fest and a cracking page-turner. She’s the kind of author we want to be when we grow up.

Phillip K Dick: Okay, okay, it’s a massive cliché, but are there any SFFH authors who haven’t, in some way, been influenced by PKD? Our favourites include The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Martian Time-Slip, and his short stories (we love Faith of our Fathers and the wonderfully pulpy Second Variety).

Stephen King: Another predictable choice! That said, we believe there are only three ways to become a better writer: Read a lot, write constantly, and read King’s On Writing. It goes without saying that he’s the king of the character-driven, ‘ordinary people in extraordinary situations’ novel.

Lauren Beukes: Her Arthur C Clarke award-winning novel Zoo City is an exercise is (seemingly) effortless and original world-building. Her latest, The Shining Girls, blew our socks off and proves that writers don’t have to be pigeon-holed and constrained in what they want to write. She also nurtures new writers – especially from South Africa – at every opportunity.

Richard Matheson: Any horror writer who hasn’t read I am Legend needs to sort that out stat. Forget the uniformly dire film adaptations, this is a stunning exploration of paranoia and isolation. His other novels and short stories (and work on the original Twilight Zone series) are worth revisiting again and again.

SA Partridge: No other writer can get inside the head of the South African mixed-up teen like Sally Partridge, and she’s inspired us to write characters who are flawed and believable. Her writing is raw, powerful and honest.

Patrick Ness: Like David Mitchell, Ness is the kind of writer who makes us long to be better writers. Ness’s Chaos Walking trilogy is the perfect example of character-driven storytelling melded with seamless world-building (it also made us cry like babies). We defy anyone to read A Monster Calls and not be haunted by it forever.

China Mieville: Another master world-builder, whose imagination is both intimidating and inspiring. In our opinion, the insane imagery in The Scar and the political scope of Iron Council are pretty much unparalleled. Younger readers should try the whimsically dark Un Lun Dun.
Lavie Tidhar: Tidhar’s Osama is a mind-blowing mash-up of alternative history and noir, told with impeccable literary skill (plus, he can also be very funny). His output is staggering.

Cat Hellisen: Cat Hellisen’s cliché-busting debut, When the Sea is Rising Red, set in the brilliantly realised Hobverse, is marketed as YA, although it’s the perfect example of a crossover novel. Another world-builder extraordinaire, and a massive talent. We can’t wait for her next novel, Beastmaster, to come out.

 .................................... The Blurb  ....................................
On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.
A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.
She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.
Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.
Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.
Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

 .................................... My Thoughts   ....................................
In Short
- Although this is a short story I didn't feel this stopped me from getting into the story.
- I very quickly got into the book and struggled to put it down.
- Such a new unique twist to the vampire world.
- Shade of a Vampire is an engrossing read with a great main character.

In Long
I have to admit that I tend to find I don’t get into short stories that well so when I started A Shade of Vampire I never expected to get into the story so quickly and so much. Bella has fitted so much into 147 pages, I am in total admiration of her.

When I read the blurb of A Shade of Vampire I loved the sound of the storyline, I haven’t read a book like this and it totally took a new twist on the vampire world. Being only 147 pages I did wonder whether Bella would be able to get enough information about the island as well as the characters and storyline into the book.

Within the first few pages I had been introduced to Sofia and felt like I knew more about her from these few pages than I know about some characters within a whole book. It was nice as I bonded with her and came to like her personality. I often find this is the problem with short books, the characters lack characteristics and personality, it definitely wasn’t the case here.

The storyline was really engrossing; I hated having to put my kindle down and just waited for the next opportunity to pick it up again. I found myself wondering what was going to happen next and desperate to find out.

Final Thoughts
A Shade of Vampire is a unique, thrilling book which I couldn’t put down! It has everything from a unique storyline and setting to great characters which all add something to the story. I can’t recommend it enough.

Cover Crazy #91

Left DrowningLeft Drowning - Jessica Park
I love water in books, I think so many effects can be added with reflection and pretty colours. Always a winner for me!
I love this cover because :
- As I said above, I love water in books and think this cover is an example of that. It really makes me intrigued as well because of the title.. seems suitable.
- I love the font used for the title and also the pink font of the authors name. It just adds some colour to the cover.
- I like that you can't see the girls face, don't like seeing faces in covers.
Dislike :
- I think the cover would look better if the title was in the same position but just a bit smaller.

Play With Me (With Me in Seattle, #3)Going Vintage - Lindsey Leavitt
I have to admit, I don't usually like these covers but this one really grabbed my attention. Maybe i am in a soppy mood and in the mood for romance!
I love this cover because :
-  Love the effect of the rain! It looks awesome and is definitely what grabbed my attention.
- The image is a really romantic one, I just really like it!
- Really like the colours used, the backing colour along with the rain and the white and blue tops. They just blend nicely.
- I love books that state they are part of a series, why can't more books do this? So annoys me when I buy a book to find out it's like 4th in a series!

Waiting on Wednesday (#89)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

The Hazards of Skinny DippingThe Hazards of Skinny Dipping - Alyssa Rose Ivy
Published : 21st May 2013
Ok ok, I will admit it. Another book which grabbed my attention because of the awesome cover.
Especially as it's finally getting warm in England I really want some summery easy going books. Doesn't this book sound just like that?
I love how colourful the title is and the picture on the front. Kinda cheesy but also hot.
I wouldn't want to read these sort of books all the time but for a little read in the summer, I love them!
-
The Blurb :
This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions and finding out that your dream guy is bad in bed. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along.

Top Ten Books I Recommend The Most
An old one I missed.

Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1)
There is something about this book which can never make me forget it. The characters really were the best fictional characters ever and felt so real to me. I recommended this constantly and a few family members read this due to my recommendation.

Delirium - Lauren Oliver
Oh how I adored this book SO much. I was so emotionally charged and connected with this book. I hated putting it down and having to enter the real work again.

With the other two books I mentioned I went into them knowing they were very popular and that I was more than likely going to love them. With Pushing The Limits I really didn't expect to love it as much as I did. Always so nice to be suprised
You probably haven't heard of this book, it's a non fiction written by a girl who was sold into the sex industry. It was such a shocking read, I couldn't put it down.

Oh I loved this book. It is labelled as the YA version of The Time Travelers Wife. I loved it and couldn't recommend0 it enough.

Die For Me - Amy Plum
As I am writing this I still remember sitting in my boyfriends garden in the rare British sunshine reading this. I got into it straight away. I still can't believe I haven't read the rest of the series!

Stay
Stay - Deb Caletti
This book is so intense but I coudn't put it down. I still need to read another Deb book but I WILL. I adored this book and think she is an author I will love.

Bitter End - Jennifer Brown
I couldn't wait to read this book and did go into it hoping I would love it as much as I did, It didn't let me down, couldn't recommend it enough.

Divergent - Veronica Roth
It took me ages to get to this one, the second one was already out and I decided it was time to read Divergent. I loved it! Took me into another world.

The Scorpio Races - Maggie Stiefvater
I am a massive fan of Maggie and adore her books. She's one of those writers which really grabs my attention and keeps it through the whole book. The Scorpio Races was no difference!

Cover Crazy (#88)

Ink (Paper Gods, #1)Ink by Amanda Sun
I really can't make my mind up on this cover. Whenever I see it then I always think how pretty and unique it is but at the same time I can't decide whether it would grab my attention amongst a bookshelf of other books.
I love this cover because :
- Definitely a unique cover, even more so for a YA book.
- I like how it's like a painting and the paints have 'dribbled' down like that.
- I am intrigued about this book, it makes me wonder why this sort of cover was chosen for the book. Why a painting? And therefore makes me pick the book up.
Dislike :
- I feel like it's missing something which gives it the WOW factor.

Going VintageGoing Vintage - Lindsey Leavitt
I adore this cover, everything about it! I would definitely pick this book up.
I don't know why but when I love a cover so much I find it hard to explain why, going to give it a go anyway!
I love this cover because :
-  Love the 'old' feel of this cover with the camera.
- The dress she is wearing is so beautiful and really goes with the rest of the cover.
- I am really into pictures and editing and think the lighting behind the girl pretty much completes the cover as well as makes it feel very summery.
- I like how there isn't lots of text on the front, just the title and author's name ensures your attention is on the picture.

Month of Men Blog Tour by Steph Campbell

Please welcome Steph Campbell to Books for Company!
I am so pleased to be able to bring such a great post as my first post back to blogging! I haven't yet read Delicate or Grounding Quinn but definitely hope to as soon as possible!
Thank you Steph for this great post, I love finding out more about the books from the authors point of view and has definitely made me very excited to read these books.

I didn’t always want to be a writer. I know that goes against what I’m ‘supposed’ to say, or what most authors say, but it’s the truth. Not to say that I haven’t always written, I have. A lot. I just never considered it as a career until around 2006. I’d tried my hand at writing novels prior to that point, but they were melodramatic adult books with little voice, and I never finished one. Around 2005, I started reading young adult, and after devouring every YA title I could get my hands on for a year, I started writing DELICATE.
I wrote the novel in about three weeks. We were waiting to be able to move into our new home, and my desk was disassembled and packed away, but Sydney, Trevor and Grant were so vivid in my mind, I had to get them out on paper. I hooked my PC up on the floor of my bedroom and sat on the carpet and wrote the entire thing.
As soon as I finished writing Delicate, I began work on GROUNDING QUINN. While Quinn’s voice came easier for me, her story did not. If you’ve read the book, you know that she’s a complex, mess of a character. I really wanted to do her justice, and have people understand where she was coming from. She can be hard to love at times, but I wanted readers to want to stick with her. For that reason, Grounding Quinn took me almost an entire year to complete.
Writing is still that way for me. Some books I am able to churn out in a matter of a few short weeks, while others, I have to let percolate, let their stories unfold slowly for me. Some books I plot out completely, chapter by chapter. Others, I write entirely from the hip. Every story is different. I think that not sticking to a set way of writing lets each story be unique, and each characters voice truer.
It was several years before Delicate and Grounding Quinn were picked up by a publisher. But I didn’t stop writing. I kept at it, creating new stories, allowing new characters into my mind.
I write every single day. Even if I don’t feel like it. Even if I don’t think the words are any good, and even when I end up deleting some of them the next day. If I’m not feeling a particular project one day, I move on to something else—whether it’s outlining a new story or editing one I’ve shelved.
The market is changing so much, so quickly, but I think the main thing most important thing I’ve learned over and over again is that you can’t try to force something to follow a trend. You have to write what’s true to you and to your voice. If you do that, you will find your audience.
