Barbara Delinsky's Top Ten Escapes

1. Arizona. I love the dry air and desert landscape, both of which are different from ours here in New England.

2. Hiking. In the aforementioned Arizona. There’s nothing like exertion to clear the head.

3. The Cotswolds. Love the narrow roads, the stone walls, the pastures. Love the charm of the towns and the sense of history.

4. Knitting. I zone out when I do this. It’s therapy. Always.

5. The lake. We spend weekends on a lake in New Hampshire. I especially love it in the middle of winter, when it’s just hubby and me, snowed in and forced to spend the weekend reading in front of the fire. I should be forced more often.

6. A manicure. This is a quickie escape, thirty minutes of being pampered and stroked.

7. Denver Chocolate Pudding, which is a positively decadent dessert served at my favorite restaurant not far from the lake in New Hampshire. When we’re not snowed in, we go there. Denver Chocolate Pudding is a warm, gooey brownie with hot fudge sauce and dual dollops of whipped cream and vanilla ice cream on top.

8. Lavender. Love this smell – it takes me away. I’m writing about it in my work-in-progress, Sweet Salt Air.

9. Waterfalls. Like the one described in Escape. Here we capture the power of nature. How to hold onto life’s mundane worries in the face of such raw beauty?

10. A good book. I’m talking, one that grabs you and holds you through 400+ pages of print. But you knew I’d end with this, didn’t you.

  4. The great thing about the weather warming up is that I can visit parks and go hiking. There are some really picturesque forests and parks in my area. My favorite is being able to hike and see the lake just below. It helps clear my head too. One of my easiest escapes that enjoy daily is reading!

  22. Just reading your list and imaging all your ten top escapes made me feel relaxed and a little sleepy! Although I can't knit or hike to save my life, reading is definitely one of my biggest escapes from reality and I absolutely love the smell of lavender. We have a lavender plant in our front garden and my shelf is lined with lavender-scented lotions and creams.
