Cover Crazy #103 - Nicole Williams Month

Cover Crazy is a meme I enjoy taking part in as a book lover because for me, although they say don't judge a book by it's cover, covers have a big influence over whether I pick a book up or not!

I think you either love or hate these covers and for me I love them!
Love how they go so well together, and the red with the black.
Also love how the title is presented. Great covers!

Nicole Williams Book Quotes #4

Nicole Williams Month

I love Nicole's writing and one of the reasons I love her writing is because the amount of awesome quotes which you can get from her books.
I have actually only read the Crash series but know even from those three (and Up In Flames) that so many awesome quotes can be pulled from her books.

My Favourite Quote :
“We live our lives afraid of change and if we were to just embrace it instead, it wouldn’t seem like such a big deal when it hits us.”

Up In Flames
Here are some quotes from Up In Flames :

“Don’t be scared of making mistakes,” she said, waiting for me to look at her before continuing. “Be scared of making none. Because if you’re not making a healthy number of mistakes along the way, you’re not really living life to its fullest.”

“I might kinda, sorta, really, truly love you”

“You'd better start rocking that boat right now or else your live is going to pass you by before you even start living it.”

“We live our lives afraid of change and if we were to just embrace it instead, it wouldn't seem like such a big deal when it hits us”

Blog Tour : Deadly To Love Excerpt + Giveaway

Excerpt
Happy with the amount of photos I had collected I started to head back out of the forest, still flicking through my shots. As well as close ups, I had taken a few landscapes and as I was almost at the edge of the forest I noticed something in one of the photographs that made me stop. In the left hand corner was a figure that looked mostly human, but was blurred as if they were moving on the spot. A cold shudder shot through me. Looking over my shoulder I became slightly panicked and felt as if someone was following me. My eyes flicked and searched the shadows. Even though there was no sign that anything had ever been behind me, the forest looked different now - dark and threatening. Instinctively I broke away and ran, still clutching the camera that was displaying the freaky image. Surrounded by trees I didn’t stop until I was free of the forest and back in the open light and sight of my house. Throwing open my door, I slumped against the inside of it, regaining my breath from the short sprint. Once I had recovered I looked down at the photo once more, just to make that I hadn’t been seeing things. The old saying “the camera never lies,” came into my mind and for the first time I wished it not to be true. Sure enough though, as I looked down at the screen, the figure was still there and this time I noticed a red and orange glow around where its feet should have been. The image almost looked like the person was on fire but I thought I would have surely noticed if there had been a burning man in front of me. Read the blurb

About The Author
Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.
Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

Cover Crazy #102 - Nicole Williams Month

Cover Crazy is a meme I enjoy taking part in as a book lover because for me, although they say don't judge a book by it's cover, covers have a big influence over whether I pick a book up or not!

The first cover is my far my favourite out of these two.
I think the second is way too plain and kind of reminds me of almost a vampire type book with how her neck is extended.
The first cover is much better in real life as the red stands out much more and I love red with black!

Blog Tour : The Night Has Claws by Kat Kruger

The Night Has Claws (The Magdeburg Trilogy, #2)
Please welcome Kat to Books for Company.
Thank you very much Kat for stopping by!

Was there any part of the book you found particularly hard to write?
Because this is the second book in the series, I found it was a lot easier to write in general because all the characters were still "talking to me." That said, I delve deeper into my version of werewolf mythology in The Night Has Claws and that presented the biggest challenge in my writing. I had to get my ideas down in a way that makes sense to readers while also touching on the complexities of the werewolf societies in the world of the Magdeburg Trilogy. On the other hand, if we're talking about "hard" in terms of emotions I'd say the last chapter in the book took a lot out of me.

What three things do you always have near you when writing?
1. My iPhone which is basically my reference library.
2. A dog-eared copy of The Night Has Teeth because I oddly feel the need to look back at what my characters have said and done in order to move forward.
3. A glass of water.
This is probably the most boring three things an author can possibly list but my real life isn't very exciting.

Do any of your characters have characteristics from people who you know?
If there are, I didn't do it consciously. When I developed the characters they kind of took on lives of their own. If anything, I think there are probably elements of my own personality in both Connor and Madison: his tendency toward obliviousness and her dry sense of humor.

Do you have a favorite character?
If I had to choose it would probably be Roul but it's mostly because he has a lot of back story that doesn't make it onto the page. So much so that one day I'd like to do a graphic novel prequel about him. Arden's a close second though. He's actually the least complicated of all the characters in the series, his motivations are fairly single-minded and focused on loyalty, but that's what makes him so dear to me too.

How did you come round to writing Young Adult books?
I'm a huge fan of the genre. As a freelance writer during the day a lot of my writing is non-fiction which can be kind of dry. I've always been a writer on some level for as long as I can remember, really. Because I enjoy reading YA books and write for a living anyway I felt I could contribute something new.

Part of the book takes place in Germany. How did you research the locations?
The first book (The Night Has Teeth) and part of The Night Has Claws take place in Paris. That was easy because I've been there. Germany's on my travel bucket list still. Whenever I can't draw from a personal experience, I go to the internet. You can find enough online to piece things together. I chose Quedlinburg because of its proximity to Magdeburg and for its historic charm. Google Maps and Flickr were a great help when I needed visuals. Travel forums also provided a lot of details that I wouldn't be able to find unless I visited the places I mentioned. I have to say, I love doing the research on locations, science, etc. about as much as I enjoy writing the books!

Music and playlists play a large part in your writing. If you had to pick one "theme song" for Connor, what would it be?
Connor's character is evolving as the books progress. At this point in the series I'd say his theme song is "Furr" by Blitzen Trapper. He's new to this life as a werewolf, trying to figure things out. Because he wasn't born into their world he has to find a balance between being human and being one of them.

Heaven's Hand is a pretty steeped in religion. Are they based on a real group?
In a way, yes. When I was doing my research on werewolves, I looked into the Benandanti who are mentioned in Kelley Armstrong's series among others. It led me to a mention of an inquisition in the 1600s where a man named Thiess of Kaltenbrun was accused of being a werewolf and he testified that he was a "Hound of God." I kind of ran with that idea, taking elements from other religions in order to create Heaven's Hand (a.k.a. The Hounds of God).

Uninvited (Uninvited, #1)Uninvited by Sophie Jordan
Published : 28th January 2014
Seriously?! How awesome does this sound? A dystopia with a whole new sort of twisted world where people get their genes tested and can have the genes to be a murder?
I am really intrigued by this story line and very excited, the whole idea is awesome. I just hope the characters live up to the storyline to make the book amazing.
Really interested to that it's a two book series, most are three or more so maybe this book misses out the middle book syndrome?
Oh it sounds so awesome and like a rollercoaster of a ride!
Uninvited (Uninvited, #1)

-
The Blurb :
The Scarlet Letter meets Minority Report in bestselling author Sophie Jordan's chilling new novel about a teenage girl who is ostracized when her genetic test proves she's destined to become a murderer.

When Davy Hamilton's tests come back positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome (HTS)-aka the kill gene-she loses everything. Her boyfriend ditches her, her parents are scared of her, and she can forget about her bright future at Juilliard. Davy doesn't feel any different, but genes don't lie. One day she will kill someone.

Only Sean, a fellow HTS carrier, can relate to her new life. Davy wants to trust him; maybe he's not as dangerous as he seems. Or maybe Davy is just as deadly.

The first in a two-book series, Uninvited tackles intriguing questions about free will, identity, and human nature. Steeped in New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan's trademark mix of gripping action and breathless romance, this suspenseful tale is perfect for fans of James Patterson, Michelle Hodkin, and Lisa McMann.

I love these covers!
Love the different colours used in the titles and the fonts. Also love how the titles bit are kept the same so you can tell they are part of a series but are all still quite different.
The images are all very steamy ones, doesn't take much to work out what the books are about.

Nicole Williams Book Quotes #2

I love Nicole's writing and one of the reasons I love her writing is because the amount of awesome quotes which you can get from her books.
I have actually only read the Crash series but know even from those three (and Up In Flames) that so many awesome quotes can be pulled from her books.

Here are some quotes from her Lost and Found Series.

My Favourite Quotes :
“We will all, at some point in our lives, fall. Every single one of us. We shouldn't spend our time trying to avoid falling. We should spend it finding someone who will help us up!”

“Sometimes we just have to cut off the dead branches in our life. Sometimes that's the only way we can keep the tree alive. It's hard and it hurts, but it's what's best.”

Lost and Found (Lost and Found, #1)
Lost and Found :

“We shouldn't get hung up on the questions we can't answer because life, by definition, is confusing. We're never going to have all the answers. Never. We should focus on the questions we can answer and make peace with the ones we can't.”

“When you open yourself up to people, you let the bad in with the good. I can't promise I won't ever hurt you, Rowen. But it won't be on purpose. I will never hurt you intentionally. I can promise you that.”

“You think you deserve this. You think you deserve to be alone and suffer. You’ve convinced yourself you’re so worthless that you’ve gone to the extreme to punish yourself. You think you deserve a life of misery.”

“Every morning we get a chance to be different. A chance to change. A chance to be better. Your past is your past. Leave it there. Get on with the future part, honey.”

“…when I looked into those eyes of his that saw everything, those eyes that saw me, I knew the fight would be worth it. The struggle to let him in when I wanted to barricade the windows and lower the gates would be a battle I’d never regret fighting.”

Near and Far (Lost and Found, #2)
Near and Far :

"Rowen Sterling had every last piece of me, and I didn’t want any of them back."

“It’s time you start thinking about what you think you can’t live without and what you actually can’t live without.

“Those people who claim it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all? Yeah, they’re full of shit.”

"Our priorities aren’t what we say they are. They’re what we show they are"

“Don’t let the things you think you need to do keep you from doing the things you actually need to.
Okay? Fight for the things that matter—don’t waste your energy on the rest.”

 .................................... The Blurb  ....................................
For Lucy Larson and Jude Ryder, love might be the thing that just isn't enough. The only easy thing about Jude and Lucy's relationship is their love for one another. Everything else is hard. Especially when it comes to reining in Jude's trigger touch temper and Lucy's increasing jealousy of the female attention that Jude attracts. Feeling the stress of trying to hang on to her quintessential bad boy while becoming the foremost dancer in her class, Lucy knows something's going to break. She wants both. She needs both. But if she doesn't make a choice, she risks losing everything.
 .................................... My Thoughts   ....................................
In Short
- Clash follows on perfectly from Crash.
- I love that Nicole tested Jude and Lucy's relationship in Clash and didn't give them an 'easy ride'
- Both Jude and Lucy's characters continued to grow and develop in Clash.
- It's an emotional and raw read that is near impossible to put down!

In Long
I finished Crash, the first book in the series, feeling quite satisfied and was unsure whether to read Clash. I think I was a bit nervous I would feel let down by it after loving Crash so much and not knowing if Nicole could write another book on them which I would love as much as I did as Crash. I am pleased to say that Clash most definitely was not disappointing and I loved spending more time with Jude and Lucy.

I loved that Nicole tested Jude and Lucy’s relationship in Clash by putting them in quite a testing living situation. Lucy and Jude are living 5 hours away from each other as Lucy is at dance school. I was really intrigued to see how their relationship would cope with this big challenge as well as the other challenges they faced.

Clash is quite an emotional and raw read. I really loved that Nicole went deeper into both the characters lives and I felt like I got to know them even more than I did in Crash. Their characters have definitely made both Crash and Clash amazing reads, even more so because both characters have likable personalities. The pace of the storyline changes throughout the book but there wasn't any point I got bored and I struggled to put the book down each time I had to!
Final Thoughts
I am so glad that I chose to read Clash straight after Crash, I loved getting to see where Jude and Lucy’s relationship went next and to see them face their next challenges together.

Cover Crazy #100 - Nicole Williams Month

Cover Crazy is a meme I enjoy taking part in as a book lover because for me, although they say don't judge a book by it's cover, covers have a big influence over whether I pick a book up or not!
These are my favourite three covers out of the different sets.
I just love red against black and white images and I think the covers are very simple but still stand out. Also like the fact they actually link in with the books themselves.

I also like these covers, again pretty simple but sweet at the same time. For me though they just aren't as striking as the previous set of covers and also are all a bit samey for me.

These covers are very different from each other. I much prefer the Crash cover to the Clash one. The Clash is a bit too plain for me whereas I love the cover for Crash.

Little White Lies by Katie Dale Blog Tour

Little White Lies Extract
Sweat trickles down the back of my neck as I check the computer clock for the millionth time. ‘Hurry up!’
‘Patience, Titch.’ Kenny chides. ‘You can’t rush genius!’ He winks, his eyes the only part of his face visible through his balaclava.
My heart beats madly in the darkness. ‘This is taking too long.’ I hiss. ‘Are you sure you can do it?’
‘Piece of cake.’ Kenny assures me, his gloved fingertips dancing quickly over the office keyboard, illuminated by the unbearably bright computer screen. ‘Trust me.’
A woman laughs loudly outside, and my eyes fly to the unshaded windows.
‘Can’t you reduce the brightness or something?’ I beg. ‘Someone might see.’
‘Settle, Petal, I’m nearly there.’ Kenny clicks the mouse as it flickers quickly over the screen.
I glance again at the open blinds, then carefully pad across the dark office to the window. I reach for the cord – then headlights suddenly slice across the room.
I drop to the floor, my pulse racing. ‘Shit!’
Kenny looks over. ‘Titch. Seriously. Chill. No one can see us.’
I swallow hard and stand up.
‘Unless you stand in front of the window, of course,’ he adds. ‘Get back here.’
I scurry back to his side, but suddenly I freeze. ‘What’s that?!’
‘What?’ Kenny hisses.
‘I thought I heard something.’
He rolls his eyes. ‘You’re just para–’
A door slams noisily, cutting him off.
Kenny’s eyes widen as footsteps echo on the stairs.
‘Quick!’ He flicks the screen off, grabs me, and ducks beneath the computer desk, just as the fluorescent strips flicker on, flooding the room in glaring white light. I squeeze myself closer to Kenny, his heart thrumming madly against my ear.
‘Lucky we had to come back, eh mate?’ A man’s voice says. ‘Old Harris would’ve had your guts for garters in the morning!’
‘I don’t understand.’ A second man says. ‘I swear I set the alarm when I left.’
Kenny’s eyes meet mine as we both recognize the voice of Neil, the work experience mentor I’d shadowed for the past week, learning the ropes – including secretly memorizing the codes for the burglar alarm and computers. Turns out my careers advisor was right – work experience is invaluable.
‘You’re going senile!’ The first man chuckles.
‘Watch it, Trev – you’re older than me, remember?’ Neil says.
‘Older and wiser.’ Trev laughs. ‘At least I don’t forget stuff! Where’d you leave your phone this time?’
‘It must be on my desk.’
Shit. Neil’s desk. The desk we’re hiding beneath!
I hold my breath, my blood pounding deafeningly in my ears as his heavy footsteps thud towards us.
Oh my God, I’m going to jail. I’m going straight to jail. What was I thinking?!
I fold my knees into my chest, trying to make myself as small as physically possible as I squeeze my eyes shut, praying desperately, madly, hopelessly…
Please don’t find us. Please don’t find us. Please, please, please…
The footsteps get louder, closer, then a mobile phone bleeps.
‘Hey, Neil!’
The footsteps stop. I hold my breath.
‘False alarm. You left it at home, you plank!’
My heart leaps. No way!
‘What?’ Neil says.
‘I just got a message from your mobile – your wife’s got it, come on, let’s get out of here before you lose all your marbles!’
The footsteps move quickly away, and the door slams again.
‘Hey,’ Kenny nudges me after a few moments. ‘They’ve gone.’
I crack open an eyelid. The room is dark again. ‘What happened?’
He holds up a mobile phone, a text message shining on the screen.
Sent to TREVOR: Hi Trev, can you tell Neil I’ve got his phone at home?
‘Neil’s phone?’ I stare at him. ‘You sent the text?!’
He grins. ‘How much do you love me?’
‘Kenny, you’re a genius!’
‘Like, duh,’ he shrugs. ‘Should buy us some time to get out of here anyway. Let’s go.’
My heart sinks. ‘What about–’
‘This?’ Kenny winks, his dark eyes sparkling as he holds up a USB stick.
‘You got it?’ I stare at him. ‘You actually got it?!’
‘I never break a promise,’ he grins. ‘What’s it worth?’
I take the precious memory stick and throw my arms around him, adrenaline surging through my veins, unable to believe what I’m actually, finally, holding in my hands. It’s taken me a while to get here, but I’ve done it.
‘It’s utterly priceless.’ I whisper. ‘Thank you so much, Kenny.’
‘Thank me later,’ he smiles. ‘First we have to get out of here.’

Nicole Williams Book Quotes #1

I love Nicole's writing and one of the reasons I love her writing is because the amount of awesome quotes which you can get from her books.
I have actually only read the Crash series but know even from those three (and Up In Flames) that so many awesome quotes can be pulled from her books.

Here are just some of them I love from the Crash series.

My favourite quote :
“Mom told me that love is like a seed. You've got to plant it to grow. But that's not all. You need to water it. The sun needs to shine enough, but not too much. The roots have to take hold," he continued, narrowing his eyes in concentration. "And from there, if it pops its head above the surface, there are about a million things that could kill it, so it takes a whole lot of luck too.”

Crash (Crash, #1)
Crash :
“It was silent, but a silent that was so loud I wanted to cover my ears.”

“And I’m sorry I ruined everything we had before I could admit it to you. Before I could admit it to myself. You didn’t make me a better person, because no one can do that. You made me want to be a better person.”

“You’ve got all my firsts,” he said. “All the ones that matter.”

“How does a guy like you promise someone forever at eighteen?”

“Easy,” he said, pressing a soft kiss into the corner of my mouth. “He finds a girl like you.”

“The name’s Jude Ryder, since I know you’re all but salivating like a rabid dog to know, and I don’t do girlfriends, relationships, flowers or regular phone calls. If that works for you, I think we could work out something special.”

If you haven't yet read this series please note some quotes will be spoilers!

Clash :
“You're all I've got, Luce. I'll do anything not to lose you," he said, his scar pinching into his cheek. "Just tell me what I'm doing wrong and I'll fix it.”“See? That’s it,” he said, waving his hand. “That’s part of what makes us so great, Luce. I’m crazy. You’re crazy. Together, we make our own brand of crazy.”

“When are you going to stop looking at all the reasons you shouldn’t be together and start focusing on the reasons you should be?”

“It's because you're letting the fairy tales you grew up hearing in storybooks and the baseless ideas of love cloud your mind. Love isn't easy. Especially the really good kind. It's difficult, and you'll want to rip your hair out just as many days you'll feel the wind at your back." She paused smiling to herself. "But it's worth it. It's worth fighting for”

“Love is just as much suffering as it is sweetness. If it was perfect, that's what they'd all it. They wouldn't call it bittersweet.”

“Jude wasn’t just my first love. He was my forever love.”

Crush :
“This was my life.  And you know what? Life was pretty damn good. Even despite the fact that I had no clue where I was.”

“I'm sick of hearing people tell us how not right we are for each other. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean we're not true.”

“I'd discovered another of life's cliches by being with Jude: the happier you are in life, the faster it passes you by.”

“I can forgive a man’s past faults, his present shortcomings, and his future failures if every minute of every day he loves me like it’s his religion.”

Thanks to everyone on Goodreads and Amazon who shared the quotes

 .................................... The Blurb  ....................................
Southpointe High is the last place Lucy wanted to wind up her senior year of school. Right up until she stumbles into Jude Ryder, a guy whose name has become its own verb, and synonymous with trouble. He's got a rap sheet that runs longer than a senior thesis, has had his name sighed, shouted, and cursed by more women than Lucy dares to ask, and lives at the local boys home where disturbed seems to be the status quo for the residents. Lucy had a stable at best, quirky at worst, upbringing. She lives for wearing the satin down on her ballet shoes, has her sights set on Juilliard, and has been careful to keep trouble out of her life. Up until now.
Jude's everything she needs to stay away from if she wants to separate her past from her future. Staying away, she's about to find out, is the only thing she's incapable of.
For Lucy Larson and Jude Ryder, love's about to become the thing that tears them apart.

 .................................... My Thoughts   ....................................
In Short
- I loved getting to know about Lucy and her life.
- I found the relationships in this book all really interesting and loved watching them develop.
- The storyline stayed interesting throughout the book with a few twists.

In Long
Nicole Williams is an author who I have wanted to read a book by for ages. When I received the Crash series for review I can’t tell you how excited I was to start reading them. After being told how awesome the series was by Jess from Jess Hearts Books I couldn’t resist Crash any more.

Within the first chapter I was drawn into Lucy’s world. I was really intrigued by her, although her life was difficult it hadn’t always been and I really admired her for adapting to her new life and the new struggles she was going through.

Jude’s character is one which I fell in love with straight away. I don’t know what it is about a bad boy with attitude but they always seem to win me over very quickly. Even more so when they show a side soft to themselves to prove they aren’t all bad.

As well as Jude’s and Lucy’s characters there are plenty of other characters in this book which are all developed really well and added to the story. I really found Lucy’s relationship with her mother interesting to read as well as her and her dad’s relationship.

Sometimes with books like Crash the author creates these amazing characters but fails when it comes to the storyline. Crash was definitely not a victim of lacking storyline, there are a few twists throughout the book which really add entertainment value to the book.

Final Thoughts
Crash was just the sort of book which I was in the mood for; I couldn’t have been more pleased that I picked this out from my massive TBR pile(s). If you’re looking for a YA romantic read which involves a bad boy then this book is for you!

Book Tour : Elixir Bound by Katie Carroll + Giveaway

Thank you Katie for stopping by Books for Company.
I love these sort of posts and really enjoyed reading it! I am sure my readers will too =)

Thanks so much for having me on Books for Company today!
There’s just something fun about getting an inside peek at where creative people work, whether that be an artist’s studio, a chef’s kitchen, or a writer’s desk. So today I thought I’d give you all a look at where I’m likely to be found clacking away at my keyboard crafting a masterpiece (or you know, whatever you’d like to call my stories!).

You’re most likely to find me in my home office.
This is my desk…well, technically this is my husband’s desk because my desk is too full of knickknacks, greeting cards, little boxes of stuff, and my jewelry box to actually use as a desk. I like to call this room the library (though nonbookish people may be inclined to call it an office) because we took the door off the closet and squeezed two large bookcases into it. It also serves as a playroom for my 2-year-old son and a temporary storage space because our attic is empty.
Why is our attic empty? Because it’s being renovated into what will be my new writing space.
I’d love to tell you that I’m such a hot-selling author that I’m treating myself to a new office as a reward for all my book sales. Sadly that is not the truth. I work from home full time (work that includes stuff other than writing) and finishing the attic is a way for my family to have enough space to grow. One of the perks of expanding the house upstairs is that we don’t need to use it as a bedroom yet, so I’ve laid claim to it as a writing space, though it will probably be taken over with toys as tends to happen in a house with a toddler.

One morning a week or so, I do try to get out of the house to write. Most often you’ll find me at the local coffee shop in the downtown area.

From my favorite corner of the coffee shop, I can watch the traffic, trains, and people going by. I also get an eclectic mix of music and eavesdrop on any conversation people around me might be having. Great fodder for a writer! And if the weather is just right, I might even get to sit outside in the courtyard to work.
No matter what writing space you catch me in, I almost always have a cup of tea with me. Tea and my laptop are the only necessities for a good writing day for me, but having such great work spaces helps! What’s your ideal work space?

About Katie
Katie L. Carroll began writing at a very sad time in her life after her 16-year-old sister, Kylene, unexpectedly passed away. Since then writing has taken her to many wonderful places, real and imagined. She wrote Elixir Bound and the forthcoming Elixir Saved so Kylene could live on in the pages of a book. Katie is also the author of the picture app The Bedtime Knight and an editor for MuseItUp Publishing. She lives not too far from the beach in a small Connecticut city with her husband and son.
