The Blurb :
Ari can’t help feeling lost and alone. With teal eyes and freakish silver hair that can’t be changed or destroyed, Ari has always stood out. And after growing up in foster care, she longs for some understanding of where she came from and who she is.
Her search for answers uncovers just one message from her long dead mother: Run. Ari can sense that someone, or something, is getting closer than they should. But it’s impossible to protect herself when she doesn’t know what she’s running from or why she is being pursued.
She knows only one thing: she must return to her birthplace of New 2, the lush rebuilt city of New Orleans. Upon arriving, she discovers that New 2 is very...different. Here, Ari is seemingly normal. But every creature she encounters, no matter how deadly or horrifying, is afraid of her.
Ari won’t stop until she knows why. But some truths are too haunting, too terrifying, to ever be revealed.

This book never really stuck out and made me really want to read it, it doesn’t have my sort of cover and the blurb doesn’t grab my attention a lot but this book is amazing. I feel rather lucky this year because the amount of amazing books l have read already! I have no idea how l will choose my top ten of 2011. Be a lot harder than the top 10 for 2010!
Anyway on to my thoughts.
This book pretty much has something going on from the beginning, the main story line is introduced within the first 30 or so pages. This is good but l did feel one thing happened a bit too fast and l was like “would it really happen that quick?”
In fact there were a few scenes where l was thinking “what who’s that character again? Are they related to them or them? Are they good? Evil?” l just got a bit confused which ruined some scenes for me which could have been good and more gripping. Most of the time my confusion was answered by Kelly as she did well to go over things but there are a lot of characters. When a story has a lot of characters you can sometimes struggle to get to know them enough but Kelly focused on a few main characters so you could grow a bond with them.
Ari is a character that has had a few problems in life and wants to try and put to rest some of them. Sometimes she annoys me a bit with what l felt was overreacting in some cases, being a really angry sort of person and being a wimp in some ways but then really strong with other things. Saying that, although Ari sometimes did annoy me Kelly did an amazing job of putting forward Ari’s feelings to the readers and her thoughts. It really made her feel real which then mean't l felt a connection with Ari.
One of the only ‘negative’ thing l thought about Darkness Becomes Her while reading this was random sentences. E.g. - ‘l could look at him forever. But there was something he would never ever know’. I can see how this makes sense but l think it just needs to be explained a little bit more, like what she’s feeling when looking at him.

WARNING, This could be seen as a spoiler (Below)
At the beginning she is nearly killed but further on she is apparently wanted alive, this confused me a bit, maybe it is just me being blonde though and not following the story probably, or they weren't going to kill her?

Overall (No Spoiler)
You would be missing out if you didn't read this! It's a really fast paced book which l LOVED!
The only reason it isn't 5/5 is because l didn't get the same 'feeling' which l get with some books that are 5/5. It may sound strange but with books that are 5/5 l get this amazing feeling when l finish it, not saying l didn't have great fun reading this! Oh and how did l forget, the mix of all the different paranormal 'creatures' in this is great!
Very much recommend this! I'm sure (and hope) we will have lots of great books by Kelly to come and l will be sure to read them.

  2. It's not one I would have chosen either but it does sound very good. They could have done so much more with that cover. The gate looks great, but the rest could do with an overhaul. Still, it's what's inside that counts and it sounds good!

  3. This sounds like a pretty good read, BUT you're right in that it doesn't make you want to read it from the cover and the blurb. I'm still uncertain if I want to go for it!

    Thanks for sharing the review!

  6. Sounds interesting, but I do detest random sentences - they always read forced and don't really have a place in the story! Thanks for the honest review!

  7. @ Beth - Thank you!

@ Karen - l agree, the cover is a bit boring. The UK one is great!! We seem to be lucky with the covers we get lately.
Saying that l can't see what the second book will contain, this book was nicely rounded off!

@ Elodie - l doubt you will be disappointed if you do =)

@Linds - I don't like random sentences either but l think this book makes up for it and maybe l was being picky! lol
