Check out all 4 parts of the discussion here.
This discussion's main focus was what influences you to buy or not to buy a book.
I tackled this by asking :
- Do you mainly read reviews before buying a book?
- How much do star ratings depend on whether you buy a book?
- Do you feel you are less likely to buy a book with less reviews?
- Do reviews/star ratings ever turn you off a book?
Have you ever brought a book because of a review?
Reviews
Most people said they like to read reviews on books they are unsure about or read the reviews on their favourite blogs.
The main issue and concern for everyone was coming across spoilers while reading reviews of books which they haven't yet read, this sadly put a lot of people off reading reviews and pushed people more towards reading reviews by a small selected group of bloggers.
The good news was most people said they are often buying books because of reviews so the reviews people are reading are leading to good things by helping their readers find new books and then buy them!
As well as reviews being a big influence to get people to buy books, negative reviews also turn a lot of people off a book, although some people did say it depends on what book it is.
When it came to talking about if books with less reviews put them off a lot of people said this is actually a positive for them as these sort of books are usually a 'hidden gem'. I thought this was great and it's good to know all books are given a chance.
Star Ratings
I have to admit, star ratings mean a lot to me due to lack of time l just don't have enough time to read all the reviews so to get a quick overall opinions l find star ratings a good thing. People who did see some positives in star ratings and they mentioned how it's a great way to get a quick overall opinion on the book as well as people mentioning that star ratings can make their mind up on books they are unsure about.
Also a lot of people mentioned the big negatives in star ratings which l agree with but like l said, l just don't have time to go through all reviews. Sadly with reviews you can't find out why someone loved or hated a book and therefore they may be giving the book a low ratings because of something which you may have loved. This was mentioned as a big negative as well as the fact that everyone has different ways to rate books, some people may be harsh when rating a book so a 4 may be really good whereas for someone else a 4 might be really rubbish.
That's it for that discussion!
I had great fun and learned a lot from this discussion, thanks everyone.
