Discussion Post - Where do your read books go?

My Thoughts
I have only ever kept around 5 books! Not including my childhood ones from when l was around 4 which l keep for my nephew and niece to read when they come up to my room. I also keep the ones which my boyfriend give me as a gift as l know it would upset him if l swapped them.
There are many reasons which l don't keep my books, many of the reasons are listed below but my main one is because l don't reread. I don't see the point in keeping a book which l know l won't read again. I always think the space could be used for a book which l haven't yet read and could have waiting for me. I mean, l have over 250 physical copies of books (not including e books) and l just wouldn't have enough room if l kept my books.

Reasons for keeping books

Pretty Bookcase
I have to admit, there is nothing nicer than having a pretty bookcase which have a whole completed series instead of the odd one which you would probably have if you swapped or got rid of most of your books. Also l think it's nice when you have a number of books by a author.
.
Karen from The Slowest Bookworm said - I love looking at them on my bookshelf (so pretty!)
Ellie said from Curiosity Killed The Bookworm- Sometimes just because it's super pretty and I like to look at it.
Rebecca from Kindle Fever said -  They are real pretty to look at sitting there on the shelf. Gosh, I so want my own library.

Rereading
Lots of people love to reread their books and if you are getting rid of them it makes it a bit difficult to do that, there isn't really any point in swapping to then want it back!
.
Kate from That Book Blog said - I want to be able to read them again someday. I probably won't for most of them, but it's nice to have the option.
Small Review from Small Review said - If I think there's a chance I might want to reread the book then I keep it. I'm a big re-reader
Mel from Mel's Random Reviews said -  I only keep a book if I think I will re-read it at least once.
Rebecca said - I LOVE going back to a great story to relive it all.
.
Memories -
For some people, books can hold strong memories. Maybe not about the book itself but what was happening in your life while reading the book. For example one book may remind you of a certain hoilday which you read it on.

Kate said - Some books have certain memories attached to them
Small review said -  I like keeping  books for nostalgic reasons.
Stephanie from Books Are A Girl's Best Friend said - There are lots of memories attached to books I've read and I like keeping them as a reminder.
Rebecca said -They (Books) become like an old friend to me.

Condition of Books
I don't know about you but l am so fussy with keeping my books in good condition and when you are swapping books you can end up with books which have been read a lot. If you like to keep your bookcase spine-crease free then this may be difficult!
.
Karen said -  I seemed to end up with a bookshelf full of old, tatty, crappy books.

Series
This kind of goes alongside the 'pretty bookshelf part' as a reason for keeping a series can often be because you don't want your bookcase to have just a few of the books in a series. Another reason may be because you like to keep a whole collection together to maybe reread one day.
.
Donna from Book Passion For Life said - I only ever keep a book when its a WHOLE series I've read and LOVED.

Feeling proud
I think when you keep the books you have read you can look back on them and think 'l loved that one' and 'look how many l have read'. With me, because l get rid of all the books l read, l never see how many l have actually read.
.
Stephanie said - I love seeing my collection grow in the bookshelves in my room.

Reasons for not keeping books

Disliked Books
If you didn't enjoy a certain book for whatever reason it seems best to get rid of it as you won't be rereading it (and leaves space for another book ;]).
.
Kate said - If I really didn't like a book or I'm certain that I'll never read it again, I will probably donate it to a charity shop.

.
Passing them on
This is something l do with a lot of my books, well actually all of them in one way or another - Swapping, charity shop, passing them on. But by passing them on l mean sending them to friends which l love to do =) I think when l pass them on it means someone else can enjoy the book and l know they will also appreciate and look after the book whereas when l swap l mostly don't know the person.
..
Mel said - After all, even if it's not a book I loved, it doesn't mean that someone else won't love it!
Jackie from Housewife Blues (..) said - (I) give books to certain friends who I know like the same author.
.
Giveaways
It's always great fun to have giveaways on your blog and l know 99% of people love second-hand book giveaways, l know l do!
.
Jackie B Central Texas said - Some of them are whole series that I use as giveaways on my blog to spread the love for reading a certain author that I enjoyed but will not re-read those books
.
More room!
Of course, when you get rid of a book then it means you are making room for another which is always a good excuse to go to the library or book store and buy a new book which you can then get excited about =)
.
Kate said -Getting rid of books after you read them clears up a lot of room and as someone who likes all their books to be shelved, it saves me a lot of time and money spent on buying and building a bookcase.
Karen said -   The disadvantage of keeping all my books is of course SPACE.
Stephanie said - I'm running out of room to keep my books.
Ellie said - Space to keep books is a real issue.
Donna said - The main reason for me is space, I haven't got much so if I buy a paperback, I try to sell it or swap it.
.
Cheaper (swapping)
Although postage has gone up so much (in the UK) it gets harder to make swapping worthwhile. On play.com you can buy 2nd books for £2 ($3.20) which is sometimes more than postage BUT it usually ends up being cheaper, especially if you are swapping new books or HB books.
.
Stephanie said -  If I didn't have enough money to buy new books, I would definitely consider swapping books I didn't enjoy as much.
Donna said -  I think swapping is a fantastic idea, you get to read books that you keep meaning to and your only paying for the postage costs rather than the book itself.
.
Places your read books might go to
For people who did say that they get rid of there books these are the places which people said they go -
Charity shop
Swapping
Friends
Giveaways

  1. Great post. It's interesting to see everyones views.

Postage is so expensive these days I find it's quite often cheaper, or not a lot more expensive to buy new from somewhere that posts for free.

  2. Interesting read :) Thanks for the post :P

I see all the points.. Though I am one of the person who just can`t get myself to throw/give away one of my own books. Even though I know I will not read it again.
But I like to think that I will maybe reread them. Miraculously :P

  3. I love all of these discussions and look forward to them! I'm very mixed even though I don't re-read very much if a books part of a series I like to keep it incase I want to go back and look a few things up if I've forgot what happens and I like to keep the books I love as like many people said the memorys that come with them. I also want it to be available so I can lend it to my friends and family :-) other than that I have no problem with giving books away whether its to charity in a giveaway or on a swap. I'll only ever keep books I really love or are part of a series :)

  5. Interesting post!

I am a bit of a book hoarder, thou I do love swapping, but only with people I trust not to destroy the books.

  6. I used to keep every book I owned Jodie and at one time had 30 boxes of books plus shelves and shelves full, since discovering the Half Price Book Store where you can sell your used books and Paperback Swap where you can swap with other members the book shelves are all I have left and sad to say my Books To Be Read almost outnumber the ones finished! However I just read something very true, I would rather be "drowning" in books than not be!

  7. This post was so much fun to read. I liked seeing all the different views on saving and getting rid of books. I think I agree with every point made. It's so nice "spending time" with other book people.

  8. That was a really interesting discussion, I can't believe you only keep about 5 books! I am the opposite if I love a book I keep it and wont part with it, I reread my favourite bits time and time again. It's all so much easier now to keep books digitally than having bookcase after bookcase taking up space but for me there is something comforting in having a well read favourite book.
